Strength-Based Assessment That Finds Hidden Talents
Traditional assessment often works like a game of “gotcha,” catching students in their weaknesses rather than showing their strengths. The support becomes mutual and reciprocal rather than one-directional.
Technology as an Equity Tool
Educational technology research offers us incredible opportunities to personalize learning without stigmatizing students. Adaptive learning platforms can provide individualized practice opportunities that adjust in real-time to student responses. Text-to-speech software can level the playing field for students with reading difficulties. Video creation tools can allow students to demonstrate knowledge in ways that bypass traditional writing barriers.
The key insight from research on assistive technology is that when these tools are available to everyone, they stop being markers of deficit and become choices for learning. A student might choose to use speech-to-text software not because they “can’t” write, but because they want to capture their ideas more efficiently. Another student might select a graphic organizer not because they’re struggling, but because visual organization helps them think more clearly.
